That drama will continue to unfold. But for now, here are 10 films—plus a clutch of very honorable honorable mentions—that remind us what movies, at their best, can mean.
Two exotic dancers Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopezboth single mothers needing to provide for their families after the crash, hatch a highly illegal scheme to charm clueless Wall Streeters out of their money.
When the going gets tough, the tough … hustle. Instead, it shows his ideas in practice, telling the story of an unlikely friendship between Mr. Rogers Tom Hanks and a sour journalist Matthew Rhys riven with anger issues.

Even more striking is its deep humanity: both the scammers and the scammed earn our sympathy. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, both astonishing, star as a married couple in the midst of breaking up: To their horror, and ours, their at-first amicable split grows into a monster they had no idea they were capable of creating. Quentin Tarantino concocts a fantasy in which Sharon Tate—the actor murdered by Manson family members in —gets the much happier ending she deserves.Gimbal mount helix 7
For roughly its first two-thirds, The Irishman is hugely entertaining. Then it shifts into something far more complex. But an anniversary screening of one of his older films sets off a chain of events that shifts everything: A lost love reappears as if conjured from a dream, and other bits of his past—particularly recollections of his mother, played as a young woman by a radiant Penelope Cruz—reassemble into a joyous, haunting interior monologue that demands to be explored visually, through his art.

Meanwhile, Jarmusch stages scenes of gruesomeness with a shrug-ish good humor that belies this simmering-with-anger critique of a world going, perhaps deservedly, to hell. The volatility of youth and the vitality of kinship with present and former relatives serve as sturdy thematic undercurrents for this low-key genre tale. Indoctrinated from a young age by his surrogate-parent gang leaders Bill Camp and Vera FarmigaWidner preaches xenophobia and division until he meets single mother Julie Danielle Macdonald.Opsview cloud
Her love, and the promise of a healthier sort of family, compels him to reconsider his life choices. A portrait of the arduousness of transformation and redemption, Skin shares direct, unsettling ties to our current geopolitical moment.
Eddie Murphy regains his superstar mojo in Dolemite is My Namea raucous biopic fashioned in an Ed Wood and The Disaster Artist mold from the writers of the former about Rudy Ray Moore, a clownish wannabe-entertainer who hit it big by playing the profanely rhyming, kung-fu-fighting, ladies-bedding Dolemite.
Convinced the three chalk pieces she received from her teacher grant her magical wishes, Estrella tries to survive her harrowing new circumstances on the streets, which are further complicated by two adult thugs intent on reclaiming their stolen property from Shine. It casts a spell through malevolent horror imagery as well as its moving portrait of kids banding together to form a makeshift clan — and, in the process, to courageously face a world intent on destroying them, physically and psychically, at every turn.
Until, that is, it reveals itself to be about a crew of filmmakers making an undead horror movie. And then, it becomes a story about how those artists are in fact overrun by a real zombie threat. Think of it as a ghoulish Day for Night. Invisible Life is comprised of well-worn elements: impulsive passions, unexpected out-of-wedlock pregnancies, disapproving fathers, controlling husbands, and dreams crushed under the weight of a society that expects women to conform or be cast out into the wild.
Good luck maintaining a dry eye through its wrenching present-day coda. In a refrigerator, a disembodied hand awakens, and embarks on a quest to reunite with its former owner, who we soon learn is Moroccan-born French teenager Naoufel voiced by Hakim Faris.

Cambridge Analytica stole the data of 87 million Facebook users and then utilized it to target swing voters with political propaganda on behalf of clients like Brexit and the Trump campaign. Weddings can be a torturous drag for singles, so longtime friends Alice Maya Erskine and Ben Jack Quaid decide to spend their overbooked nuptials season tag-teaming events as platonic dates.
Be it stumbling their way through one ceremony and party after another, or embarking on their own unlikely relationship while dealing with their troublesome parents, Alice and Ben prove to be excellent company, she using booze and a sharp tongue to cope with her loneliness, and he clinging to high standards as a way to avoid commitment and stave off potential abandonment.
As mean, and quite a bit leaner, than its voracious animals, Crawl is an example of B-moviemaking done right. During an apocalyptic Florida hurricane, struggling but talented collegiate swimmer Haley Kaya Scodelario goes in search of her MIA father Dave Barry Pepperwhom she finds in the basement of their old home, wounded and trapped by a swarm of alligators. Their confined setting is a veritable labyrinth that —as with CGI-ified imagery of storm-ravaged communities — director Alexandre Aja imbues with underlying allegorical heft.
From start to finish, Crawl is the sort of edge-of-your-seat, cringing-with-delight thriller that Hollywood rarely makes these days. In the near future, Major Roy McBride Brad Pitt is sent on a top-secret mission to Neptune, where his commanders believe his renowned father Clifford Tommy Lee Jones — missing for decades on a quest to find intelligent E. His quest is fraught with literal danger and, also, emotional, psychological and spiritual peril, as Roy searches the heavens for the indifferent father that abandoned him.
Brought to life by Pitt with a wellspring of bubbling-beneath-the-surface pain, yearning and hope, Roy is a man whose steady pulse rate is emblematic of his sorrowful, walled-off remoteness. Better still, this blistering ode to rubber-burning independence and individuality also gives Miles — a wheelman of unparalleled audaciousness and skill — the rightful due he was denied decades earlier.
Such was the profound existential crisis faced by year-old Alex Lewis when, inhe was injured in a car accident, lapsed into a coma, and awoke to find that he recognized no one save for his twin brother Marcus.
That afforded Marcus an opportunity to rebuild his sibling with stories about their past — some of which omitted crucial events from their horrendous childhood. With acute empathy and formal eloquence, director Ed Perkins investigates this shocking tale from the perspectives of both brothers, whose bond was forged by love and trust, and torn asunder by deception and betrayal. The story of two friends who, like their hometown, are in a state of uneasy transition, The Last Black Man in San Francisco affords narrative and aesthetic surprises around every corner.

Filmmakers know that when putting a movie together, some of the best elements that can heighten a drama, ground a comedy, or just make you sit up a little straighter is a bit of chemistry and a peek of sexuality. With that, a new crop of films combining story and sexuality come to light. With the sexiest movies ofthere's no through line that connects them all outside the fact that each of them have the capability to raise an eyebrow or two. Be it Brad Pitt showing up at 55 with a shirtless scene that most 20 year olds can't pull off, or Jennifer Lopez swinging around on a pole, the sexiest films of aren't about getting raunchy.
It's above that—it's about alluding to the sexiness off screen. Someone Greatthe Netflix romcom that allegedly inspired a Taylor Swift song, is that sweet spot where a really decent movie also has mad sexual energy. Following a woman Gina Rodriguez after a break up, she spends the film remembering the best parts of her relationship with her ex, Nate Lakeith Stanfieldand yes: the two share a couple pretty sexy scenes as well. Is it an absolutely insane movie?
It also features a scene with a completely stripped down Luke Evans and a prosthetic penis. If you've heard about the film based off a book of One Direction fan fiction, this is it. A24's surreal horror film is part terrifying and slightly arousing.

The aftermath is Gloria Bell is the perfect example of how a little bit of suggestion goes a long way. Ultimately, Gloria Bell is the story of a woman discovering the next chapter of her life, but Julianne Moore proves that sexy is not synonymous with being a something.
No one is more ravishing in a film this year. Credit where it's due, Long Shot somehow manages to make a romance between Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen seem surprisingly realistic—or at least funny.
Long Shot is built upon the sexual tension between Rogen's dogged journalist and Theron's Secretary of State. And damn if there isn't something sexy about a smart guy and powerful, intelligent woman. I mean, just look at this dude. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was one of the most anticipated movies ofyet it's Brad Pitt's shirtless year-old body that completely steals the show. No one can deny the sex appeal of Pitt.
Amid some of the year's more overtly sexual films, Rocketman actually scores a pretty high spot on that list. Paramount took a swing with the Elton John musical-biopic, and it features one of the sexiest and most realistic gay sex scenes in film history. In his article highlighting the best movies ofRichard Brody of The New Yorker said, "It's the year of apocalyptic cinema of the highest order, the year in which three of our best filmmakers have responded with vast ambition, invention, and inspiration to the crises at hand, including the threats to American democracy from a wannabe tyrant, the catastrophic menaces arising from global warming, the corrosive cruelty of ethnic hatreds and nationalist prejudices, and the poisonous overconcentration of money and power.
The major crisis specific to cinema outleaps even the great merits of individual movies and invokes basic and comprehensive questions of which movies can be seen and how those movies are acknowledged. It's a terrific year for movies, but it would seem much less so if we only considered movies in wide release. Versions of that refrain come up every year, but what used to be merely a gap between the multiplexes and limited releases has now become an abyss.

Absolutely freaking brilliant! This is up there with my top two films of the year. Holy crap I love this movie, to pieces that is much more than it is presented in anything you may have heard or seen from trailers or anything else. Not only that but also it lets the film get under your skin it truly is a bliss to watch a film by someone who never lets you go.Choir songs with tonic solfa

What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult. I know it feels pretentious or almost so snobby to put this at number 1.
But I can tell you that nothing and I mean nothing unless the rest of year will have great movies but has this has to be my favorite movie of the year.
I liked Hereditary and I think Ari Aster is a great filmmaker but this just elevated to a whole new level. But instead of it being a film where people will break down and try to explain piece by piece what it all means, how about actually taking a moment to realize wtf did we just watch. And I feel like being an American and yes that is important this film has become something truly horrifying but at that same time a movie where everything falls into place and it is happening before your very own eyes and you can not do anything to stop it.
From the opening shot to the very last frame this movie is constructed so seamlessly that it is warranted to question everything about this movie. It is at its heart a film about relationships and breakups also what it means to be a good boyfriend or girlfriend or even to be in a relationship with someone you love. Which honestly does change your viewpoint on relationships as a whole. Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor are just the best in every way but not just them and Will Potler but also all the natives at the festival are incredibly fantastic with their acting abilities to just acting like nothing wrong is going on and this is how things go.
Which again is what I find terrifying. Loved it. In Gotham City, mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck is disregarded and mistreated by society.
He then embarks on a downward spiral of revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his alter-ego: the Joker. Finally, finally, finally! Leaving the theater I knew I witness something incredible.
The only outcome I wish this film can do, is not only have people open their eyes to the possibilities not just superhero movies can go, but what cinema can offer. I understand what Martin said but this is how we show him and others wrong. Now not to say all comic book movies need to be like this. Hell no. But to offer new and exciting directions films can take us.
DC has never been better putting quality film after quaintly film after another and this is the crown jewel of the whole dynasty. We may never see another film quite like this. But what we do have now is something capable and what films should be doing is having people understand the world we are living in is damage and broken and we can not expect others to do the work for us. Which is something Arthur believes he is doing but this is why it is a movie to bring us the possibilities if not done right.
